Other Comments:

[Best Novel] The central character is Ramon Ruiz-Sanchez, a biologist and Jesuit priest from Peru who is part of a commission sent to decide whether a newly-discovered planet called Lithia should be opened for human trade and colonisation. At first glance, Lithia seems perfect: the inhabitants are intelligent, friendly, helpful, and apparently entirely free from sin. They also have no concept of God. Is Lithia a paradise, or a monstrous hoax concocted by the devil to fool humans into believing that God is not necessary to live a moral life? To accept one idea is to deny the existence of God. To accept the other is to grant that the devil also has powers of creation, and thus reintroduce the concept of dualism, where God and the devil are equal and opposed powers. Neither alternative is acceptable to the Catholic faith, yet what other interpretation is there? – Greg Slade
